Research Summary:

  • A vehicle to analyze performance, visualization, usage and interaction models
  • Based on OpenSim to facilitate growth and adoption of 3D Internet technology
  • A collaboration with industry and academia for Supercomputing '09 and beyond

The 3D Internet is a rapidly converging set of technologies used for visualizing information on the web in game-like 3D environments. This convergence promises to allow future Internet users to interact with people and information in ways that are much more natural and intuitive than today's Internet. The ScienceSim virtual world is a 3D Internet application being developed by the the Supercomputing 2009 conference as a tool for visualization, education, training and scientific discovery. Intel is collaborating with the conference organizers to develop the hardware and simulation infrastructure behind this world. Based on the OpenSim virtual world simulator, ScienceSim also seeks to foster open-source innovation as a means to accelerate the proliferation of 3D Internet technology. Read the whitepaper and visit www.sciencesim.com to learn about the latest developments and find out how you can get involved.
