Research at Intel Day 2007 - Intel Platform Research

Technology to Enhance and Enrich People's Daily Lives - Research at Intel Day 2007

Overview

The breadth of Intel's research and development effort spans the tiniest transistors and microprocessors, to the systems they power and how people will use the systems. Intel focuses its research on people, their needs and how technology can enhance and enrich their daily lives. This year's themes include: Tera-scale Computing, Building the Mobile Tomorrow, Exploratory Research, People-Centered Innovation, Silicon Leadership, and Energy Efficiency.

Intel is researching a collection of technologies and architectural improvements that together will result in dramatically higher performance per watt for systems across market segments from small form factor to high-performance servers. This research is concentrated on improving the power profile of Intel components, taking a systems approach to designing power-efficient platforms, and collaborating with industry partners and customers to develop broader energy-efficient system solutions for the datacenter.
Exploratory research at Intel is advancing the state of the art through world-class technical expertise, open collaboration and university ties, and multi-disciplinary teams. These activities span a broad spectrum of technical areas including computer architecture, distributed systems, networking, communications, machine learning, human-computer interaction, ethnography, and emerging markets, with focus on making technology more viable, more useful, more personal, and more essential in our daily lives.
Mobile computing and communications research at Intel is an international, multi-disciplinary program aimed at solving problems faced by users, operators, and communities. Our researchers are looking at solving the roadblocks to ubiquitous connectivity, enabling devices and applications that help users to live and work well, and enabling and leveraging a wireless device ecosystem that allows users and communities to create individual computing environments or establish ad-hoc networks for a richer computing experience.
Our ethnographic research programs explore fundamental paradigms and phenomena of everyday life to help Intel think critically about how people, practices, and institutions matter to technological innovation. A major goal of our research is to inform product development by discovering usage models and uncovering real-world customer needs.

The Intel® Tera-scale Computing Research Program is a worldwide research effort to create platforms for the next decade with capabilities only dreamt of today. This requires embracing a shift to massive parallelism through scalable multi-core architectures, platforms and software which uses tens to hundreds of cores to efficiently process hundreds of threads and terabytes of data. Demos in this zone will highlight Intel's vision and research into these future platforms.
